Vicker’s hardness tester is a simple instrument to test the hardness value of metalsaccording to Vicker’s Principle ISO 6507 and ASTM E92.Also can measure the diagonal distance of the indentation, the testing load. Construction

 

The machine frame is designed to accommodate the high precision loading system. Specimen is clamped by vice or supported by proper fixtures. The test cycle is fully automatic. The accurate load is applied on a diamond indentor by means of dead weights. After a lapse of time, the load is removed automatically. The image id digitallized using a CCD Camera fitted on the machine and is captured by the PC. The diagonals of the indentation are measured by the PC and the Micro Hardness number is displayed directly on monitor.

Preparation: Ensure the surface of the material to be tested is clean and flat.


Selection of Test Load: Choose an appropriate test load based on the expected hardness of the material. For microhardness testing, this load is typically in the range of a few grams to a few kilograms.


Preparation of Indenter: Verify that the indenter (usually a diamond pyramid with a square base) is clean and in good condition.


Application of Load: Apply the chosen test load to the material's surface using the Vickers hardness tester. This is typically done by lowering the indenter onto the surface with a controlled force.


Indentation: Allow the indenter to dwell on the material's surface for a specified duration, usually a few seconds, to ensure proper indentation.


Measurement of Indentation: Use a microscope or optical system integrated into the Vickers hardness tester to measure the diagonal lengths of the indentation left by the indenter.


Calculation of Hardness: Calculate the Vickers hardness value using the formula: HV = 2×F​/d2, where HV is the Vickers hardness value, F is the applied load, and d is the average of the two diagonal lengths of the indentation.


Reporting: Record the test parameters, including the applied load, indentation dimensions, and calculated hardness value. Ensure compliance with relevant standards such as ISO 6507 or ASTM E384.
