A coating thickness gauge (also referred to as a paint meter) is used to measure dry film thickness. Dry film thickness is probably the most critical measurement in the coatings industry because of its impact on the coating process, quality and cost. Primary methods used by coating thickness gauges

Magnetic induction method
This method is useful in non-magnetic coatings on ferrous (magnetic) substrates. For example, measurement of paint on a steel surface.
In this method, the gauge generates a magnetic field. When you place it on a coated ferrous substrate, the magnetic flux is affected by the thickness of the non-magnetic coating. This is measured by the gauge and the coating thickness is obtained.
Eddy current method
This method is useful in non-conductive coatings on non-ferrous (non-magnetic) substrate. For example, anodizing aluminum.
In this method, the gauge induces eddy currents in the conductive substrate. Due to the presence and thickness of the non-conductive coating, the flow of current gets affected. The gauge measures the thickness of the coating. It can measure the thickness of an anodized layer on aluminum.
Ultrasonic method
This method is useful in measuring thickness of coatings on various substrates, e.g., non-metallic coating on plastic or wood.
In this method, the gauge emits ultrasonic pulses. These pulses travel through the coating and reflect back from the substrate. The time taken for the echo is proportional to the coating thickness. It can measure the thickness of a protective coating on a wooden surface.
Applications for Coating Thickness Gauge
Automotive Industry: In quality control process, this is useful for ensuring that the paint and other coatings on vehicles meet the standards of specified thickness. Similarly, it is useful in corrosion protection. The gauge checks that the anti-corrosion coatings on automotive parts are adequate.
